Music Requirements

MUSIC AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Vocal Music Audition Requirements MUSIC VOCAL (MV) Students will be required to sing two (2) selections from memory. The first selection must be Caro Mio Ben or any selection from the 24 Italian Songs & Arias, ed. G. Schirmer or 26 Italian Songs, ed. John Paton. The second selection can be any song from the classical, jazz, gospel or musical theatre repertoire. Suggested (not mandatory) “jazz” titles include Lullaby to Birdland, My Funny Valentine, and Almost Like Being in Love. Students may provide their own accompanist or bring a high quality recorded accompaniment tape. There should be NO VOCALS on this recording. Students will also be required to display pitch recognition and sight-singing skills. A cappella is highly discouraged. Italian aria should be sung in Italian. Music Instrumental (MI) Jazz Instrumental Audition Requirements All Instruments (except drums) must demonstrate the following abilities on their respective instrument in addition to the individual requirements:

Focus: Note accuracy, time, and improvisation (optional) In addition to the above two selections, students must demonstrate technical facility on their instrument by performing any one solo from one of the artists below on their respective instrument. Trumpets: Lee Morgan Solos Description: Transcribed solos 18 classic solos including The Sidewinder, Ceora, Speed Ball, Lazy Bird, Moments Notice, Blue Train and Candy Bb Key Trombones: JJ Johnson Solos Description: 13 Personal Favorites These 13 solos were picked by JJ himself as representative of the best of his recorded output. Songs include Now's the Time, Blues in the Closet, Walkin', Billie's Bounce, Tune Up, Laura, Misteri. Piano, Guitar, Bass Students must prepare two selections from the titles below:

Bass students must “walk” a bass line to the 12-bar blues progression in the key of “F” and “B”-flat. In addition to the above two selections, students must demonstrate technical facility on their instrument by performing any 1 solo from one of the artists below on their respective instrument. Piano: Oscar Peterson Solos – Note-For-Note Transcription Description: Book/CD set of classic transcriptions. Part two contains… Bass: PAUL CHAMBERS Description: Book by Jim Stinnet Twenty bass solos with chord progressions, in bass clef. Student must be able to walk a bass line through both selections. Drum Set Demonstrate proficiency in the following styles:
Be prepared to sight read, i.e. demonstrate your ability to comprehend written music. Prepare one of the following tunes to be performed on the drum set.
